Anne Smyth
Entrance window and slate floorpiece
National Archive · Kew · London

Size - 10m Ø floor; 40 sq m glass. Commissioned by Public Art Development Trust. Architects - Fabrication - Floor : Fieldmount Terrazzo.
Glass : Proto Studios and Anne Smyth.

I worked closely with the architects on the project, developing the slate roundel for the entrance floor. The initial idea for using the slate came from a desire to recycle the discarded slate shelves from the former Chancery Lane site.

Sketches I made in the fabulous archive of historic maps and plans were the inspiration for my designs. Images and symbols of water from the maps are cast into the glass, representing the constant flow of information into the building.
