Proposal for Great Torrington Gateway Design proposal for a series of three beacons for Great Torrington, North Devon, to mark the entrances to the town and provide a welcome.

It was after my visit to Sudburys, Gt Torrington’s only remaining glove factory, that I started to explore the glove image. It was the perfect symbol to express the history, creativity and community spirit of Torrington. I took the wonderfully sculptural shape of the ‘gloving knife’ and used it as the basic form for each sculpture. These forms provided a ‘window’ to carry the coloured, textured and blown glass.

I worked with a local engineering company and structural engineers; the designs were to be fabricated in core 10 steel.

Designed to light up at night, each beacon would be fun with an element of surprise.
